To date, there is limited evidence and consensus on the effectiveness of school-based mental health educational programs, and no standardization for mental health education being taught in schools. Dr. Robert Milin and colleagues have undertaken the FIRST large randomized controlled trial (RCT) to evaluate the effectiveness of a mental health curriculum guide for adolescents in high school, on knowledge and stigma. Dr. Milin will be presenting findings from the Youth Mental Health Awareness Study, in which 25 Ottawa and Renfrew region schools participated, with 534 students. The project was funded by The Royal’s Foundation, with grants from Telus, The Ottawa Senators Foundation, and DIFD (Do it For Daron).
